Being a detective, Mark Chastain is good. I like that he was able “read” into nurse Karen Whitlaw’s behavior. I didn’t thought about that twist at the end

Claire Laurent is one very strong and loyal woman. Cassidy at first seemed like a jerk and I didn’t like him one bit. There is so much depth in Claire’s character which made it difficult at first to understand why she was lying. The ending, however, was not written though circumstances were implied, I would have wanted to see how Alister had gone done from this pedestal. Hooray for loyal friends like Andre.

Wick Threadgill, an ex-cop, got interested in watching over Rennie Newton, a surgeon who was a suspect in the murder of another doctor, Dr. Howell. Common bad person is Lozada, a contract killer who killed Joe, Wick’s brother. They stayed together and fell in love. They need to eliminate Lozada to be truly together. Nice plot.

I love the complications in the story and how everything were connected towards the end. Lucas Swain and Lily Mansfield are suited for each other and I just hope they stay healthy to be able to live longer.

I have probably read almost all the early books in this series till book #20, in paperback. I’ve also read Petra Connor series. One of the things I have noticed about these books is the gore. There is that certain despondency (?) that I feel when I read these books. There is always that Filipina/Filipino character. There are always those trips to dusty and almost abandoned places or inner city streets where the brave won’t dare go even during daytime.

I even had a hard time understanding the correlation of the characters actions that led to the cases. It was somehow forced. I hope JK is not mellowing down.

I’d still read those I haven’t read though because I enjoy how the train of thoughts and the explanations for behavior exhibited are done.
