Ingat Pilipinas has recently been launched to make people aware of road safety to avoid the loss of lives and properties through road accidents.
Ingat Pilipinas coalition is made up of the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (HPG), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and Safety Organization of the Philippines, (SOPI), in cooperation with Unilab and Biogesic.
According to the PNP-Highway Patrol Group, there are around 50 road accidents in the country everyday. 78% of the riding public depend on public transportation like buses, jeepneys, taxis, tricycles, pedicabs, the trains and more recently, the controversial “kuliglig”.
A lot have private transport too, via the motorcycle, which for me, safety is of utmost importance because there is a rapid rise in the number of motorcycle drivers on the road where safety is not their utmost concern and where recklessness more often than not put the drivers and other people in grave danger.
The Department of Transportation and Communication says that 80% of road accidents are caused by human error: violation of traffic rules, neglect of vehicle maintenance, overloading, and pain.
Public utility vehicle drivers, especially those operating open-air vehicles like jeepneys and buses experience a lot of pain: headache the most common among all. This condition lessens the concentration of the drivers and thus is a contributing factor to the number of road accidents. And who wouldn’t have headaches due to the heat, traffic, exhaust fumes they inhale and several other factors.
On Saturday, November 27, 2010, be a part of the big gathering for the Biggest Public Pledge event at the SM Mall of Asia in a collective effort to make the Philippine roads safer.
Register here to do your part in making the Philippines a safe nation. Of course, that is just one of the steps to be made because being safe on the road is a lifetime goal that involves the right action and reactions.
