Enough Blood on the Ballot

Make a Stand for Democracy Now: Enough Blood on the Ballot

With the 2010 Philippine Elections just a few days away, we have to make one of the most important decisions for our country by voting for leaders that our hearts, minds and  conscience dictate to us.

The Ampatuan Maguindanao Massacre which still has to be solved and seems to be on the track of not being solved still haunts many people, the victims’ families, the journalists and ordinary citizens till now.

Triggered by this fatal incident, Cherie Paris watches encourages people to stand up and be heard by saying “NO!” to electoral violence.

Enough Blood on the Ballot

A photographic tableau “Not Today” was created by visual artist and photograher Wawi Navarroza as a reminder to call for a clean, honest and peaceful Philippine elections. This will be featured in a billboard along EDSA, Mandaluyong.

News photos from the media and Francisco de Goya’s cathartic painting, The Third of May, 1808, are some of the inspirations that Navarroza looked at to create this  “critical piece that comments and re-imagines the absurdity of violence by staging a thought-provoking Real/Unreal tableau vivant”.

Not Today, The Third of May, 1808, where the Spanish resistance to Napoleon’s armies during the occupation of 1808 happened, also served as a poignant reaction against political violence.

“I got interested in re-creating a shared pathos, a familiar disturbing image as a way of addressing the problem,” Wawi Navarroza said

“I’ve designed this piece to function in many levels through the different contexts I staged this photo to be read (billboard, gallery, commercial),” explains the contemporary artist. “The work aims to destabilize our usual reception of images in order for us to remember and rethink how images shape our ideas and opinions in a massive insidious way. I’ve decentralized the meaning in this picture by depicting reality mirrored as fiction.”

She adds further: “That this photograph seems to be parading the Theatre of the Absurd is nothing different to the absurdity of massacre, war, atrocity and violence.  People have died for pointless reasons, the “senseless” killings (is there sensible killing?), the blood-stained election votes.  We all know it’s starting to feel like circus around here.  We’re living in a cabaret of underhanded politics… the huddled masses with collective amnesia, the trigger-happy demons on wheels, sequined evangelists, stupid whitening products, scams and scandals, the madmen and monsters who are willing to do horrendous acts of violence in exchange of…what?  This is our dark comedy, our self-styled campy horror show.”

The Time is Now

Not Today, Limited Edition Cherie Paris watch

In cooperation with Cherie Paris watches, the tableau Not Today, a limited edition Cherie Paris watch was launched as a reminder that NOW is the time we have to make a stand against electoral violence, brutality and bloodshed.

The “Peace” watch reminds Filipinos that it’s about time we emerge from behind our mobile phones, behind television sets and behind our Facebook and Twitter accounts and take an active and visible stand against electoral violence.

The Peace watch is designed by Wawi Navarroza and features a short hand that reads “It’s about time” and a long hand showing the words “Enough blood on the ballot,” emblazoned as strong symbols of peace, as well as non-violent and honest elections.

Sign the petition here and let your voice be heard when you say “Enough Blood on the Ballot

A Different Christmas Wish

Writing about Christmas wishes made me think about what I really want this Christmas and beyond.

Like a beauty pageant contestant, I wish for joy, love and more blessings from the Lord. Throw in world peace and I am as happy as a lark. I know it is probably too much to wish for something like that during this time of turmoil.

Oh, before I forget I need weight loss pills first before i even think I can join a beauty pageant, LOL.

Kidding aside, the developments happening after the bloody mass murder in this third world country ruled by power hungry and corrupt officials is frightening.

What is more frightening is that other appointed officials are on the same boat with the suspects who have deep ties with the sitting president.

Goons and Guns Amidst the Poverty

The grim scene that happened last Monday down southern part of  the country is considered by a lot of people as barbaric, savage and dastardly act.

This happened after Efren Penaflorida was awarded as CNN Hero of the Year for 2009.

What a shame, the massacre that is.

No wonder some people who live there have moved to different parts of the country.

No wonder a lot of professionals have opted to work and live overseas than stay here.

In this impoverished country of close to a hundred million people, poverty is very much apparent that even the basic needs of the people are not given due attention.

Health care? Can not be compared with Blue Cross North Carolina because even the “Cheaper Medicines Bill” took a while to be passed. Nurses, good ones are almost extinct because they are overseas earning greenbucks. Doctors are going that way too, as well as other health care practitioners. And teachers. And engineers. And everybody.

Sure basic education is free but that doesn’t mean children go to school. No, they can’t go to school because it takes money to pay for transportation, food, uniform and school supplies. Money that their families do not have and if they have, these would rather be spent buying food for sustenance.

Politicians are so visible these days because elections are nearing.

Bah, I don’t believe in promises anymore than I believe in dilly-dallied alliances.

God help this country.

In an ideal world, the conditions of poverty, social injustice, inequality, environmental degradation, and the weak do not exist.

Alas, we do not live in an ideal world but in a real and dynamic one where all these things, and more, exist.

We may not have time to pause and ponder on these issues while we go about minding our own business.

We may think we live in peaceful existence when we are not bombarded with these issues. Do we?

We can not carry and fathom all the world’s troubles and everyone’s worries but initiating positive changes, even when taken in small steps, can go along way.

My idea of peace, as I have written before, still stands true for me:

No matter what we do, we can not live in isolation and we are not immune to the ills of the world.

Oppression. Killing. Famine. War. Terrorism. Environmental destruction. Natural disaster. Even family matters that seem trivial, all these and more, cause disturbance of peace.

Through it all, maybe peace is a mindset, a lifestyle and a kind of wishful thinking. With all the negative things happening, can one really have a peaceful mindset?

For me, writing about peace is just one step in achieving it because even if one writes about peace but does not live it, then the effort would be futile.

Words are wonderful but actions are more than so.

How Can You Help

I have written about volunteering here for the packing of school supplies for those who were affected by floods.

It was definitely a fun learning experience for me who used to be a volunteer too.

I know it takes a tragedy for some people (maybe I am one of those) to decide to do volunteer work, however short, or sacrifice not buying a few choice items like make up, a new dress, a new pair of shoes, eye wrinkle cream and even a dinner in a fancy restaurant to be able to get some items needed by those who were affected by these kinds of tragedies.

Time can also be given, not just material things.

Last week I heard a call for help, for emotional relief goods but booo! to me, I was not able to jot down the group needing volunteers for this. Tsk, tsk.
