WordCamp Philippines 2009

WordCamp Philippines  2009 was  a mixture of different resource speakers who gave interesting talks. Congratulations to the organizers. Woot, woot!

Beau Lebens represented WordPress. Beau’s presentation can be read here.

Markku Seguerra presented WordPress in the wild with topics about deployment,  performance, optimization and security.

I enjoyed Danny Arao’s lecture on being responsible bloggers.

I guess a lot of  bloggers need to be reminded that not because they have the freedom to express their opinions mean that need not practice restraint. And tact. ‘Nuff said.

Seth Bindernagel spoke about the localization of Mozilla. This is Seth’s presentation as seen in Scribd. Translation in Filipino?  Hmmm…

Jeff of VisitSagada.com talked about writing and blogging and yes, it is advisable to “not burn bridges and be nice”. Positivity rules.

Gail Villanueva (her presentation is here) and Karla Redor talked about things tags, CMS,  plugins, custom field, and the like. (Pass the tissue please, am having a nosebleed, hehe)

Solution For a No Laptop Problem

I had a student before who wanted to have his own laptop but his parents won’t get him one. Reason? He spends too much time playing computer games.

He reasoned out that yes, he wants to have his files (or yes, games) with him wherever he goes. I even kidded him “So you want to guard your games 24/7 huh?” He just chuckled.

So when there was still no laptop for him but he did a move that surprised his parents. I was surprised too.

He got himself an external hard drive! Woohoo!

That way, he reasoned, he can bring his games with him when he go to his friends houses and that way, he can still play with these games  😀

Clever boy, he used his own money to buy the stuff.

Tech Stores

While we were out looking for a good thumb drive gadget to buy, hubby and I had the luxury of time (kids were still on vacation then) to go to a lot of tech stores just browsing, discussing and doing some window shopping. That newly opened cyber zone wing of a nearby mall is quite impressive with the range of stores it offers.

I saw some things that I first thought were joysticks and I was surprised to learn that these are actually barcode scanners, like those Symbol LS2208 😀

Oh well, I surely hope that a wee netbook (or two) will find it’s way to our home soon. I am definitely keeping my fingers crossed and my arms in welcome gestures for those, lol!

____________________________________________________

Lots of people have already started with their Christmas shopping. I know of some people who are done with theirs as I write this post.

Its just a few weeks before Christmas and everything seems to be hurrying by. The days are getting shorter. The people are hurrying to and fro.

There is something about Christmas really that makes one feel frantic. Perhaps it is because its that time of the year when reports have to be filed, work has to be completed, shopping has to be done to avoid crowds and traffic jams.

Since the advent of the internet, shopping can now be done in a breeze. How? Through online shopping of course.

There is no need to brave through the crowds, wait in line to pay and deal with kids who think the mall is their playground online shopping is done. Shopping in the comfort of one’s own home has never been better.

I still haven’t thought of anything yet to give to my husband but I am thinking he might appreciate getting something like this to start working on his carpentry skills:

Wishful thinking 😀

October Was When I Officially Started My Blog

Yes, it was one cool October day when I officially started my special education blog, Teacher Julie. I was blogging then, using free blogging platform and I was maintaining three. Hah, quite toxic for me since the contents were just the same. Never would I thought that putting contents in three blogs would just prep my blogging behavior now that I am maintaining three four active personal blogs. That excludes my blog for my homeschooling children and the group blog about parenting.

Starting a blog then was something alien to me because being used to free blogging platforms, I did not particularly know how to start from scratch. The terms CMS, web hosting, and some technical terms were baffling. Truth is, up to now I really have no idea how to propagate a blog because it is THE hubby who does that for me.

First I had to have some web hosting tutorials which I got from my husband who patiently taught me how to go through the WordPress buttons. He didn’t know a thing about blogging then too, even if he is in Information Technology so he had to read a lot of web hosting articles.
