Kandila at Dasal

Madaming kandila para sa mga panalangin:

votive candles

Marahil kung iisa-isahin natin ang mga panalangin ng bawat isang Pilipino, milyong-milyong kandila ang ating gagamitin. Ganun kadami dahil napakadami na natin.

Kandila at hiling sa post na ito.

Are You Sharing Too Much?

My parents probably warned me about sharing too much, back in the day when the digital tools and gadgets were still seen by many through movies that feature space travel, James Bond or other spy movies.I know because I don’t always give my home address to anyone wanting to write me a letter.

These days, it is my turn to warn my children about protecting their privacy especially what they share online. What I tell them:

  • don’t give the name of your school
  • don’t give the name of your parents
  • don’t give out our telephone number
  • don’t give your email address
  • don’t give our home address nor post photos with a home sign

I also tweaked the privacy settings in their FB accounts so that no one can write on their walls, see photos they were tagged with and hid all other pertinent information. There are FB contacts who can’t see photos and status updates they are not supposed to see. I did this with my FB account too.

So, I think we’re safe. Apparently we are NOT SAFE.

According to this article, The Dangers of Sharing, author Lori Andrews said “Your right to control is currently being diluted by the sheer number of things you have to do to exercise it,”

Do we put out our email addresses in the open to be able to qualify to win a bottle of lotion being raffled off in a Facebook product page?

Do we open up our Facebook private walls to make a status update for “EVERYONE” just so we can win a shirt?

Nick Bilton, a New York Times San Francisco-based columnist and blogger wrote:

“As users of these sites and apps, we have no idea the type of information we are trading for ‘free’ access.”

“It’s one thing for a service to tell me that it plans to read my e-mails, sift through my address book, or look in my underwear drawer — then it is my responsibility to decide if I want to use the service — but it’s entirely different for these company’s to do so at will.

“Sure, I want LinkedIn, Facebook and other services to offer a better experience, but I want to know what they are doing with my personal information, this way, I can choose to enter with caution, knowing the potential consequences, or try to find an alternative service that is more transparent.”

How often have you read what a free app takes away from you as you download this on your phone? If an app says it will remove or delete data in my SD card, read my sms and email, then I won’t have it in my phone, even if I really like the app.

Preparing for a Prom

I am looking at several silver tiara photos to get an idea what to get for my daughter to wear for her prom. She said they were asked to wear tiaras because they will be wearing formal gowns.

This prom is taking a lot of time to prepare, especially since they had to shell out an unusually big amount of money to pay for the venue. My daughter and her batch mates sold a LOT of raffle tickets to cover these expenses. We only shelled out less than a thousand pesos to cover everything.

Good thing we were able to borrow a gown which is exactly in the color she chose since each of them chose a color so there would be little duplication. Rehearsals every Saturdays for the cotillion dance also took up a lot of time and resources.

Prom will be next week and we are all excited.

Here is a checklist of what we needed to prepare for the prom:

  • payment for prom expenses (if this is a bit high like in the case of my daughter’s class, they should think of ways to raise funds for the expenses)

  • gowns for the ladies and suit for the guys. If you can rent, then rent. If you can borrow, borrow. If you can afford to buy your children a gown or a suit, then so be it.

  • for the ladies, canvass salons who do hair and makeup and set an appointment. You don’t want to go there with a line of ladies waiting to be made up because it so happened other schools are having their proms on the same day. If you can do the makeup on your young lady, then you save on some.

  • shoes. Buy or borrow comfortable shoes. If the young ladies are used to wearing 4-5inch heels as fashion dictates this trend, then so be it. But according to my daughter: She’d rather wear something that feels comfortable than wear something in fashion but will make her fall flat on her face and leave her with a broken heel.

  • canvass store that sell accessories that go best with the clothes like colored faux gems and stones, sterling silver jewelry, semi-precious stones. Or see what you have in your stash before you buy.

Proms are special events that young people experience. We have to help them make it less stressful by giving them all the help we can give.

We Love Adele

What’s not to love about Adele?

She wows us with her performance sans muscled men, grand fireworks, and back-up dancers in exotic costumes: just pure vocal prowess that touch the heart strings.

That song, “Rolling in the Deep” had a lot of people relating to and the song “Someone Like You” had people cry and remember.

From young girls who strive to be like her, to wanna-be singers who are making ends meet pushing computer carts and waiting on tables and to people who just know good talent when they see one, people just love listening to her soulful voice.

Congratulations for winning Best Pop Solo Performance for “Someone Like You”, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Short Form Music

Mum, girl did good!” You sure did girl, you sure did 🙂

I’m on Pinterest

Lately I’ve been noticing posts about Pinterest. It was just the other day that I got interested and decided to see what the fuss was all about.

Boy, oh, boy! What have I been missing! It is a wonderful virtual world. I am specifically drawn to the practical DIY, colorful crafts, photography boards, yummy recipes,  ideas on home designs, gardening tips and even steel buildings. I am immensely enjoying myself looking at the photos and reading the articles. I’m afraid I won’t have much time to do all those things because I am glued to the visual delights.

It’s like the best of what the blogs/websites have to offer in an easy to find place, no need to blog hop or anything like it.

I still have a lot of boxes/spaces to fill in my boards 😀
