Thoughts on 2010 Philippine Elections

It is a few days before elections and I know that most candidates are becoming antsy. Those who ranked low in surveys are probably brainstorming right now what they have done wrong. Those who rank high, on the other hand, can not rest on this achievement alone. As they have said, the “real” survey will give the “real” result when all the ballots have been cast.

That is if there have been no cheating done despite this election being the first automated one in the country.

So what are the salient points that candidates use to encourage people to vote for them?

Jobs. Health care. Education. Poverty eradication which is a Herculean task and would probably take a loooong time to be able to have a significant improvement. No corruption. Peace and order.

I wonder where sustainable development, rural development and reproductive health care (and population control) comes into play? These are among those that rank high in my list of priorities for the country.

For me,  the country’s situation is a vicious cycle that needs not just a strong leader who has the will, dedication and leadership to lead us from further sinking into the basket case that we already are.We, the people, should do our part in ensuring that the future of our children’s children would be something to look forward to.

Kefir as Facial Wash

It is the time of the month when I need to use my acne cleanser.

I am trying something else though, kefir as facial wash. Kefir is a probiotic that has several major strains of friendly bacteria which I hope would not just make the acne disappear forever but would make our digestive tracks perform better.

Yes, we have started culturing/fermenting kefir, thanks so much to my blogger friend Jane who has already shared this to a lot of people.Thank you Jane 🙂

I put kefir in the children’s milk every morning and so far they have been drinking it.

Maundy Thursday

With the onslaught of commercialism and worldly pleasures, the celebration and remembering of the essence of Holy Week is not as it used to be.

A few decades ago, people were more prayerful, more solemn and remember the trials and tribulations of the Lord Jesus Christ. Things have changed now.

Maundy Thursday these days is the day that people start going to their vacation destinations. I see nothing wrong in that especially since there is always a five or four day vacation (or more) to those who work hard to earn a living.

Yes, they earned this right to go on a vacation after working five or six days inside metal buildings or maybe even exposed to the elements.

But then again…

Maundy Thursday, according to Biblical sources and church traditions too, is one important day in the Holy Week.

I have written  in this post:

Maundy Thursday is about cleaning, which was probably the origin of spring cleaning, in preparation for Easter. It also symbolizes not just the cleaning of the physical environment but moreso, the cleansing of the soul, the heart and mind so that when the celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection comes, we are more than ready to accept Him in our lives.

I don’t mean to say that people go about washing the feet of people they meet on the streets, just like what Jesus did.

Maundy Thursday is reflecting about our actions and trying to do things that will benefit others. It is a day we think about the things we may have taken for granted and situations where we can show our humility and appreciation of what others are doing for us.

This thought definitely hits a spot about me too.

We Love Book Sale

The bookstore is one of the many places we love to go to especially when there is a book sale going on.

We got some new books during the summer sale at a nearby bookstore the other day. I got a Jonathan Kellerman (Php99.00 or a little more than $2) book while the kids got an Enid Blyton book (PhP50.00 or a little more than $1) with several stories inside including The Little White Rabbit.

Several office supplies for the eldest daughter were also purchased since she needs these for her school projects which are due for submission this week. She already did her Math portfolio and needs to complete two more projects for her clearance.

In a few weeks time, we would start purchasing school supplies again for the next school year. School year begins on the first week of June. For now the kids will enjoy two months of vacation bliss.
