Bonifacio High Street at Night

Saturday was spent having sessions with my enrichment students from 8am till 5pm. Sunday was spent staying in except for mass during the early evening.

When my husband and children came to pick me up around 5pm, I was so hungry that we went directly to a restaurant and didn’t have time to go to church for the anticipated mass because it was a bit late for that.

We decided to go to Market! Market! so that I could get some books at the weekend book sale of a popular local bookstore chain.

I got a number of books to be given as gifts. Yes, bargain books as low as PhP20, like the earlier ones I got. Of course, this was in line with my keeping a frugal Christmas 😀

Anyway, a night stroll at Bonifaco High Street and Serendra was a delight! We did have some problems with the parking though, everywhere was full. Course, that being a Saturday night.

There were so many colors to see at night. The place is huge with open spaces where children (and pets) can move about.

Looking for Baked Goodies Recipes

I am on the lookout for the perfect chocolate chip cookies recipe or the perfect fudge recipe.

Why? I plan to give these away to relatives and friends.

Because I am determined to practice “Frugal Christmas” though of course, because I have forgotten the baking lessons I have had eons ago, I may even be spending more than I care to if my baking forays will end up as failures.

Not to mention getting those necessary equipments for these experiments mean another extra dip in my already dwindling resources, I am still determined to do these and not shop for other gifts besides those for my students.

Below is something I made that comes from a recipe for blueberry muffins but I decided to put these in mini loaf pans so the kids can have slices instead of muffins. Turned out ok, I guess since they ate everything. Or maybe they were just hungry.

If these are not too good to give away, if they are edible at least and not life-threatening ( 😀 ), my kids would be more than willing to have these for themselves. I know how they loved baked goodies.

For those people I know who are eternally looking for the best fat burner, hah, get ready to eat these baked goodies once I perfect the procedure. As if.

Kinagisnan.

Most Filipinos are traditional, even if we are already living in the so-called modern world. We still believe what our ancestors have believed in centuries ago.

Karamihan sa mga Pinoy ay tradisyonal, kahit na ba nasa modernong siglo na tayo ngayon. Marami pa din tayong pinaniniwalaang mga paniniwala at kaugalian namana natin sa ating mga ninuno.

Anu-ano ba ang mga ito?

  • Pag”laway” sa paa o paglagay ng nilawayang sinulid sa sanggol na iyak ng iyak dahil ito ay “nausog”.
  • Ang pagtitika at pagbisita iglesia tuwing Mahal na Araw.
  • Ang Misa de Gallo tuwing buwan ng Disyembre at siyempre pa ang pagkain ng bibingka at puto bumbong.
  • Paglagay ng ____ sa tiyan ng baby para hindi ito umiyak dahil sa colic.
  • Pagsigarilyo ng mga matatandang babae ng sigarilyong kulay brown. Ano ngayon ang kakaiba dito? Yung dulong bahagi ng sigarilyo na me apoy ang nasa loob ng bibig.
  • Hindi pagwalis ng bahay sa gabi.
  • Hindi pagligo kapag me patay sa pamilya. Kasama na diyan kapag Biyernes Santo. Oo, me ganito.
  • Pagmamano sa matatanda at pagsabi ng “po” at “opo”.
  • Ang pagsabit ng kwintas ng sampagita sa altar.
  • Pag-ulam sa hot dog.

May maidadagdag ka pa ba?

I Want to Try Baking Again

I participate in the Food Friday food photo meme every Friday in my other GreenBucks blog which I feature food that we have had, either bought and eaten in a restaurant or prepared and cooked at home.

If I have enough time, I would prefer trying new recipes for my family instead of the usual food preparation that we have for our daily meals.

One thing that I would want to try would be baking.

We do bake sometimes but we just use the ready-mix cookie recipes in boxes so I do not particularly enjoy these because the mix is just too sweet. Matter of fact I have a container of brownie mixture waiting to be baked. I would rather do some measuring and mixing even if I have to buy the materials for this.

I have always been fascinated with baking, having enrolled in a baking course one summer many, many years ago. I have tried doing chiffon cake, cookies, mango pie, dough for pizza and siopao and a host of other things like making sugar flowers and decorating celebratory cakes.

One thing that I would like to try would be muffins and cupcakes for my children’s snacks. Loaf bread would be nice too, as well as cornbread dressing or maybe, pandesal.

No, I do not want to be a pastry chef because that would probably be the farthest thing in my mind. I just want to try to do things from scratch so that I can serve healthier food for my family.

And besides, serving warm and freshly baked goodies would be great, isn’t it?

Weird Culinary Delights(?)

This is a sequel to the WQ #17 Ugh. about whether to continue eating or to abandon eating lasagna with pig’s brain in it.

So the WQ#18 is related to this and here it goes:

What were the worst or weird food (for you) that you have ever eaten? What were your reactions?

My answer:

We have seen people on tv eating bull testicles, big fish eyes, Madagascar Hissing cockroaches and even raw ostrich eggs. Serve these with diet pills and the ideal weight would be achieved in no time. Seriously.

After the WQ#17 post was done, it got me thinking about the things that I have eaten which may not sit well with others. By the way, WP says I edited this first on 11 September, 2008 @ 0:16 by greenbucks

So the following are the things I have eaten as a young girl:

  • pig’s brains – has the consistency of soft meat (surprise, surprise, I suddenly remember having this a la omelet, cooked by my father) I loved this then, I don’t know if I would still eat this now.
  • sea turtle eggs – these looked like pingpong balls, rough skin but soft (i know, we were not environmentally concerned then (are we now?)  and this happened when I was much, much younger) No way will I eat these again because sea turtles are fast becoming extinct.
  • frogs – AKA adobong palaka (tastes good, like chicken)
  • wild boar meat (which my father’s uncles hunted)- back when the Zambales mountain range is teeming with trees and wildlife, now its almost as barren and brown as the desert during summer. It was a bit difficult to chew, that was what I remember about it.
  • dog meat – I didn’t know that it was dog meat that some of my relatives were eating then. I took a few spoonfuls. I can ‘t remember how it was although I must say that my lola’s cooking is great. Am I gonna eat this now? I think not.

So there, what were the weird culinary (delightful or otherwise) that you have sampled? If you asked me if I would be adventurous enough to try these again, I would probably say, “No, thank you.” to three of these.
